8求你记念所吩咐你仆人摩西的话,说:你们若犯罪,我就把你们分散在万民中;

Heaven-Sent Revival
"Labour pains"

Bible reading:
Nehemiah 1:1-11
1 The words of Nehemiah son of Hakaliah: In the month of Kislev in the twentieth year, while I was in the citadel of Susa,
2 Hanani, one of my brothers, came from Judah with some other men, and I questioned them about the Jewish remnant that had survived the exile, and also about Jerusalem.
3 They said to me, "Those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire."
4 When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven.
5 Then I said: "Lord, the God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments,
6 let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer your servant is praying before you day and night for your servants, the people of Israel. I confess the sins we Israelites, including myself and my father's family, have committed against you.
7 We have acted very wickedly toward you. We have not obeyed the commands, decrees and laws you gave your servant Moses.
8 "Remember the instruction you gave your servant Moses, saying, 'If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations,
9 but if you return to me and obey my commands, then even if your exiled people are at the farthest horizon, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for my Name.'
10 "They are your servants and your people, whom you redeemed by your great strength and your mighty hand.
11 Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of this your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name. Give your servant success today by granting him favor in the presence of this man." I was cupbearer to the king.
Message
We look now at the sixth and final characteristic of "revival praying": spiritual desperation. My one-time pastor, David Thomas, used to say to me when I was a young Christian: "If ever there is to be another revival in our nation, then it will be borne in on the shoulders of desperate men."
One of the best illustrations I know in the Old Testament of a person who experienced spiritual desperation is Nehemiah. When he heard of the pitiable condition of his fellow countrymen he reacted deeply. He was told: "The survivors there in the province who escaped exile are in great trouble and shame; the wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates are destroyed by fire" (v.3, RSV). Look at the reaction of Nehemiah when he received this news: "When I heard these words I sat down and wept, and mourned for days; and I continued fasting and praying before the God of heaven" (v.4).
We do not read of many of the Jewish exiles reacting in this way Nehemiah could easily have turned his attention to other things, but his heart was so sensitive to God that he became spiritually desperate. Arthur Wallis, commenting on Nehemiah's reaction to the news that the walls of Jerusalem were reduced to rubble, says: "His feelings...were the labour pains out of which a new movement of God was born."
Nehemiah was so desperate to see God work that he not only prayed but fasted as well. People have to be pretty desperate to go without food! How desperate are you in connection with the need for revival? Desperate enough to do something about it?
"Spiritual desperation causes us to intercede"
Prayer
Father, You are probing deep. But I know You do it not to demean me but to develop me. Help me, I pray, to know something more of what it means to be spiritually desperate. In Jesus' Name I ask it. Amen.
