From Confusion to Confidence
"The five woes"
Bible reading:
Habakkuk 2:5-11
5 indeed, wine betrays him; he is arrogant and never at rest. Because he is as greedy as the grave and like death is never satisfied, he gathers to himself all the nations and takes captive all the peoples.
6 "Will not all of them taunt him with ridicule and scorn, saying, "'Woe to him who piles up stolen goods and makes himself wealthy by extortion!
7 Will not your creditors suddenly arise? Will they not wake up and make you tremble? Then you will become their prey.
8 Because you have plundered many nations, the peoples who are left will plunder you. For you have shed human blood; you have destroyed lands and cities and everyone in them.
9 "Woe to him who builds his house by unjust gain, setting his nest on high to escape the clutches of ruin!
10 You have plotted the ruin of many peoples, shaming your own house and forfeiting your life.
11 The stones of the wall will cry out, and the beams of the woodwork will echo it.
Message
We continue examining the steps we must take in order to move from confusion to faith, and now we come to the seventh: keep in mind that no matter how dark and difficult things may appear, God is always in control.
The verses before us today are the first of "the five woes" (2:5-20). These "woes" spell out not only the doom of the Chaldeans, but the end of all those who choose the way of sin. Everything that is evil is under God's judgment. Though the Chaldeans would rise up and flourish, the boundaries of their prosperity were clearly drawn up by God.
The first woe (vv.6-8) has to do with the way in which the Chaldeans will find their attempts at the sequestration of God's people flung back in their faces as they themselves experience what it means to be stripped of their possessions. The second woe (vv.9-11) spells out the punishment the Chaldeans will receive for getting rich at the expense of the poor. The very houses they have built through unjust gain will cry out against them and the eventual cost of their sinful lifestyle will be the forfeiture of their own lives.
The Chaldeans would learn - and through them the other nations - that righteousness always has the last word. I once heard a young man say on television: "I would like to get this generation acquainted with this guy called 'Kick' - he gives you lots of thrills." I felt like saying: "Young man, I suggest you get acquainted with another guy called 'Kick Back'. He is always a little behind the first guy - and always has the last kick."
"Righteousness always has the last word"
Prayer
O Father, I know You have designed the universe to respond with either results or consequences. When I obey Your Laws I get results, when I break them I get consequences. I am determined to get results. Help me. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
