有一位著名的讲员曾经讲到我们今天所读的经文，他的讲题是：「你有没有一位能让你在祂面前安静下来的神？」（“Have you a God you can be still with?”）当时在座的大部分会众都受过良好的教育，他们都没有太注意讲道的内容，只因为讲员在一个句子结束时使用了前置词。（以前对英语抱严谨态度的人，认为把前置词放在句子的末后是错误的。）

在谈到永恒的问题时他们所注意的竟然只是语法的问题，这是多么可悲的事情！伟大的讲员慕迪（D.L. Moody）在讲道时往往将不定式结构分开。有一次，一位退休教师因为慕迪这个语法错误而责备他。慕迪回答说：「太太，当我看到灵魂正走向地狱，而语法却挡在中间时，我把语法的问题交给神！」

我不介意重复上述讲员那个所谓的错误，而向你提出同样的问句：「你有没有一位能让你在祂面前安静下来的神？」换句话说，你的生活是否太忙碌，影响了你将思想集中在神的身上，导致你的祷告总是那么仓促？要是这样的话，你不可能认识神，真正的认识神。

你知道吗，这段经文所说的是：除非你愿意在神面前安静，否则你不能认识祂。认识神的意思是默想祂、崇拜祂和研究祂。今天，这段经文对那些自信、忙乱、在教会进进出出的敬拜者来说，几乎毫无意义！这在属灵上是一个我们必须重视的问题。

A famous preacher once preached from the text that is before us today and entitled his message: "Have you a God you can be still with?" It was reported that most of the congregation, being well educated, tuned out a lot of what he was saying because they could only think of the fact that he ended a sentence with a preposition. How sad that when eternal issues were at stake their only thought was of grammar. The great preacher D.L. Moody often split an infinitive when preaching. Once, when a retired schoolteacher took him to task for this lapse of grammatical correctness, he replied: "Madam, when I see souls going to hell and grammar gets in the way - then God help grammar!"

At the risk of repeating the unfortunate mistake of the first minister to whom I referred, I would like to ask you that same question: Have you a God you can be still with? In other words, is your life such a ceaseless round of activity that when you come to focus your mind on God you cannot give yourself to the task for very long, so you blurt out a few prayers and then you are gone? You won't get to know God - really know God - that way.

You see, what our text is saying is this: you cannot get to know God until you are willing to stay still before Him. Knowing God means contemplating Him, worshipping Him, and studying Him. It should be a cause for deep spiritual concern that the words of our text mean next to nothing to the self-confident bustling worshippers who move in and out of our churches nowadays.
