From Confusion to Confidence
How to avoid panic
Bible reading:
Genesis 17:1-9
1 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, "I am God Almighty[a]; walk before me faithfully and be blameless.
2 Then I will make my covenant between me and you and will greatly increase your numbers."
3 Abram fell facedown, and God said to him,
4 "As for me, this is my covenant with you: You will be the father of many nations.
5 No longer will you be called Abram[b]; your name will be Abraham,[c] for I have made you a father of many nations.
6 I will make you very fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you.
7 I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you.
8 The whole land of Canaan, where you now reside as a foreigner, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you; and I will be their God."
9 Then God said to Abraham, "As for you, you must keep my covenant, you and your descendants after you for the generations to come.
Message
The next attribute of God on which Habakkuk focuses is that of faithfulness: "We will not die" (Hab. 1:12). What is the significance of these interesting words? Habakkuk is recalling that God is the God of the covenant.
Although the Almighty is eternal and beyond time, He condescended to make a covenant with men. His original covenant was with Abraham and was later renewed with Isaac and Jacob. Later still, He renewed it with David. It was this covenant which entitled the people of Judah to turn to God and say: "Lord, You cannot let us die, for You have made a covenant with us, one that can never under any circumstance be broken." Whatever the Chaldean army might do, it could never exterminate Judah, because God was bound and committed to His people in a covenant relationship that could never be broken.
Having focused on these four aspects of God's character - His eternal nature, self-existence, holiness and faithfulness - Habakkuk is now able to see his problem from a different perspective: "...you have appointed them to execute judgment... you have ordained them to punish..." (v.12). Can you understand what he is saying? He is beginning to perceive an answer to his problem and reasons thus: "God must be raising up the Chaldeans for Judah's benefit. Of this I can be certain. It is not that God is incapable of restraining them. In the light of His nature and attributes, such a thing would be impossible. I am not able to understand it fully, but I know that God cannot and will not do anything that is contrary to His character." If that is true - then why panic?
"God cannot do anything contrary to His character"
Prayer
O Father, I see You are trying to teach me Your ways - the ways written in Your Word and exemplified in the lives of Your servants. Help me to learn this lesson of how not to panic. In Christ's Name I ask it. Amen.
