From Confusion to Confidence
What do we learn from history?
Bible reading:
1 Peter 4:12-19
12 Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.
13 But rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.
14 If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.
15 If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler.
16 However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name.
17 For it is time for judgment to begin with God's household; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God?
18 And, "If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?"[a]
19 So then, those who suffer according to God's will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.
Message
One person has said that "the only lesson we learn from history is that we learn nothing from history". That is certainly true of the Christian Church. You would think, with the truth of Scripture staring us in the face - namely, that when other means fail, God will use hostile forces to punish His people - we would be more careful with our spiritual inheritance. But what are the facts?
The Church, generally speaking, seems to have little or no concern about its spiritual condition. It is playing when it ought to be praying, compromising when it ought to be convicting. The Church must accept the fact that if it does not respond directly to the gentle reproofs of the Word and the Spirit, then it will have to face the harsher reproofs of circumstances. And as history records, those circumstances can be most bitter and severe. It may seem strange and contradictory to us that God will use the unrighteous to refine the righteous, but as Scripture and history both show, this is what He does. God uses the strangest instruments to discipline His people - sometimes the last we would expect.
This principle applies not only to the Church as a corporate body but we see it illustrated in our individual lives also. You may, at this very moment, be in the position where God is using the last person you would expect, such as a non-Christian relative, acquaintance or workmate, to chasten and correct you. It's humbling, isn't it, to see someone who doesn't know the Lord being used by Him to help you know Him better?
"The Church is playing when it ought to be praying"
Prayer
O God, forgive us that although we are Your followers, we fail to follow You. Help Your people, myself included, to stay in the place of yieldedness and repentance. For we would rather be chastened by You than by circumstances. Amen.
