昨天我們說過所有人都想快樂，這沒有不對，因為這是神放在我們裡面一種根深蒂固的本能。但快樂不是你制造的成果，而是你所接受的東西。你不能制造快樂，就好像你不能制造愛一樣。你可以表達愛，但是不能制造愛。

快樂也是這樣，你不能制造牠。她好像一個喜歡捉弄人的女孩子一樣，你追逐她的時候，她會躲避你，但是當你轉離她，對另一些事物或別人感興趣的時候，反而有可能得到她。聖經和心理學對這點有一致的觀點，而數以百萬計的人也都確認這個發現。我所認識的最沮喪、最無奈的人就是那些最想得到快樂的人。有一個老太太帶著孫子去看馬戲，小孩卻害怕起來，老太太唬嚇他說：「好好的看表演，你聽到沒有？我帶你到這兒來的目的是讓你快樂，所以你一定得快樂起來！」，她說完把孩子使勁的搖，直到他的牙齒格格作響。有時，那些想得到快樂的人對自己說的話，就像老太太的話一樣。

我們今天的經文說門徒很辛苦，在黑暗中搖櫓但是徒勞無功。風和浪都與他們作對，他們的努力完全是白費的。然後耶穌來到。根據約翰對這件事的記載，他們帶耶穌上船，船就馬上去到彼岸（約六21）。快樂就是這樣。我們努力要得到，但是「辛勞搖櫓卻停滯不前」。等到我們請耶穌進來以後，我們才能悠然地到達彼岸。

Yesterday we said that we all want to be happy - and rightly so. This is a deep-rooted instinct which God has built into us. But happiness is not something you make but something you receive. You cannot make happiness any more than you can make love. You can express love but you cannot make love.

So it is with happiness. You cannot make it. She is a coquette: follow her and she eludes you; turn from her and interest yourself in something or someone else and you may win her. The Scriptures and psychology are at one here, and the experience of millions confirms their findings. The most miserable and fed-up people I know are those who are most bent on being happy. They are saying to themselves what the old lady said to the frightened child whom she had taken to the circus: "Now enjoy yourself, do you hear? I brought you here to have a good time, so make sure you do" - as she shook him till his teeth rattled.

In the passage before us today, it is said that the disciples were toiling, rowing in the dark and getting nowhere. The wind and the waves were against them and the whole venture was ending in futility. Then Jesus came. In John's account of the same event, we are told that they took Him into their boat and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading (John 6:21). This is the way it is with happiness. We strive to achieve it, but we "toil in rowing". Then we let Christ in - and lo, we reach the shore where we were going.
