今天的經文讓我們看到哈巴谷在這方面的行動。他沒有將注意力集中在自己的感受或環境上，而是集中在神的本質和品格上。他逐一提出神的一些屬性，提醒自己神本性的特點：
．祂永恆的本質──「耶和華我的神……你不是從亙古而有嗎？」；
．祂的信實──「我們必不致死」；
．祂的公義──「你派定他為要刑罰人」；
．祂的聖潔──「你眼目清潔，不看邪僻」；
．祂的全能──「你使人如海中的魚」。

有些解經家相信，哈巴谷在這裡指出神的屬性，目的是要建立一個論據，認為神提出的做法與祂的神性相違。我想17節在某程度上顯示他所提的是正確的，但我相信哈巴谷提出神的屬性的另一個原因，是為了要提醒自己神是誰，以平復自己的激動。你看，只有當我們明白神是誰，我們才明白祂所做的事。哈巴谷等於說：「主，我不知道你現在正在做甚麼，但我知道──你是公義、信實、聖潔、純潔和大能的神」。屬靈生命的原則是，我們越明白神的品格和本質，越能夠肯定祂的決定的正確性。

Now we come to the fourth step we need to take to move : establish a spiritual context in which to think through the problem.

Look how Habakkuk sets about doing this as illustrated in the verses that are before us today. He focuses his attention, not on his feelings or his circumstances, but on the nature and character of God. One by one, he singles out some of the attributes of God and reminds himself of the characteristics of God's nature: "O Lord, are you not from everlasting?" - His eternal nature; "We will not die" - His faithfulness; "You have appointed them to execute judgment" - His justice; "Your eyes are too pure to look on evil" - His holiness, "You have made men like fish in the sea" - His omnipotence.

Some commentators believe that the reason Habakkuk identifies God's attributes here is simply to build up an argument that the course proposed by God is contrary to His character. I think there is some truth in that as evidenced by his question in verse 17, but another reason why he sets about identifying God's attributes - so I believe - is to attempt to steady himself by reminding himself who God is. You see, it is only when we understand who God is that we will understand what He does. Habakkuk was saying, in effect: "I don't know what you are doing, Lord, but I know this - You are a God of justice, of faithfulness, of holiness, of purity and of power." It is a law of the spiritual life that the more we understand God's character and nature, the more certain we will be about the rightness of His decisions.
