Day 95

The example of Jesus

"Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will do this." (v.5)

Bible reading:
Psalm 37:1-11

1 Do not fret because of those who are evil or be envious of those who do wrong;

2 for like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away.

3 Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.

4 Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

5 Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this:

6 He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun.

7 Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes.

8 Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret—it leads only to evil.

9 For those who are evil will be destroyed, but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land.

10 A little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look for them, they will not be found.

11 But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy peace and prosperity.

Message

We spend one more day on the issue of learning how to commit a problem to God and wait for Him to answer in His own good time. Do you find it hard to take something you do not understand to God and leave it with Him? If you do, then believe me, you are not alone. Throughout time, as we said, the people of God have found this one of the most difficult lessons they have had to learn.

The method which Habakkuk employed of committing a problem to God and leaving it with Him was the same method Jesus used in that dramatic episode at Gethsemane. The problem which Jesus had to wrestle with was not just the problem of being crucified on a cross, but of being separated from His Father by being "made sin" for us. The thing from which the Son of God recoiled was separation from His Father. This was, without doubt, the greatest perplexity of His life.

What did He do in this situation? He prayed and said: "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet, not as I will, but as you will" (Matt. 26:39). He took the problem with which He was wrestling - the problem of being "made sin" - and left it with God. Then He moved on in the confidence that God's will is always right and that a holy God will never command anything that is wrong. If you are struggling right now with something that you do not understand - something that is causing you considerable confusion - then get up into the watchtower and just keep looking to God. But don't just share it with Him - leave it with Him.

Prayer
Gracious and loving Father, I see that if I am to enjoy peace in the midst of my problems, I must learn this lesson of leaving my problems with You. Help me begin practising it this very day. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
