3他用比喻對他們講許多道理,說:有一個撒種的出去撒種;
6日頭出來一曬,因為沒有根,就枯乾了;7有落在荊棘裡的,荊棘長起來,把他擠住了;
14在他們身上,正應了以賽亞的預言,說:你們聽是要聽見,卻不明白;看是要看見,卻不曉得;

The Vision of God
No excuse
Bible reading:
Matthew 13:1-17
1 That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake.
2 Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore.
3 Then he told them many things in parables, saying: "A farmer went out to sow his seed.
4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up.
5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow.
6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root.
7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants.
8 Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.
9 Whoever has ears, let them hear."
10 The disciples came to him and asked, "Why do you speak to the people in parables?"
11 He replied, "Because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them.
12 Whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.
13 This is why I speak to them in parables: "Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand.
14 In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah: "'You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.
15 For this people's heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.'[a]
16 But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear.
17 For truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.
Message
How are we to understand the strange words God spoke to Isaiah that we looked at yesterday: "Make the heart of this people calloused; make their ears dull...close their eyes"?
The full flavour of the Hebrew language is drawn upon to describe the condition of those who harden their hearts against the Word of the Lord. We have to understand that the gospel is not only good news but also bad news. Good news to those who receive it; bad news to those who reject it. The gospel heard and accepted is life; the gospel heard and refused is death. As Dr Martyn Lloyd-Jones put it: "The same sun that melts ice, hardens clay." It is interesting that these words of Isaiah are quoted by Jesus in our reading today, and they are applied by Him to the people of His time. In fact, these words of Isaiah (in part) are found in every one of the four Gospels. The apostle Paul also quotes these words in the last chapter of the Acts of the Apostles, when explaining that God was turning the focus away from Israel to the Gentiles, and outlining the fact that, unlike the stubborn Israelites, the Gentiles "will listen" (Acts 28:28).
Now, it is important to realise that neither God in Isaiah 6.9 nor Jesus in the passage before us is saying that some hearers will not understand but, rather, that those who are not willing to hear the Word of the Lord will find the truth hidden from them. But why preach the gospel to those who will not receive it? It is to expose and highlight their hard-hearted resistance in such a way that no one will be able to say they did not hear, and so that they will be absolutely without excuse when judgment comes.
"The gospel heard and refused is death"
Prayer
O Father, I see even more clearly that Your Word is not only a saving Word but a searing Word; it heals but also hardens. Save me from allowing my own feelings to hinder its accomplishment - positively or negatively. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
